Sharing Big News: A Heartwarming Journey of a First-Time Mom and Grandma-to-Be

Sometimes the smallest things take up the most room in your heart!

It was August 16th, 2022, when Cassie peed on the stick and found out her life was about to change forever! She hadn’t even missed her period yet! So, this is a girl who is often impatient, doesn’t like secrets, and is a bit of a control freak. I’m not sure which of these traits was at work here - perhaps all three!

Also, she likes to be certain of what’s happening in her life; so, … she actually took 35 pregnancy tests!! After about the 30th test, her husband asked her, “what does the line look like today?” Are there varying degrees of pregnancy? I think not! Either you are pregnant - or - you are not.

Once she had determined that she was indeed actually pregnant, she could barely contain herself. The first thing she did, was to find props to tell her husband, post her announcement on social media, and to tell the grandparents-to-be.

As Justin was at work the morning Cassie found out she was “for sure pregnant,” she came up with a creative way to tell him they were expecting their first child. In anticipation of this momentous occasion, she had previously purchased a little onesie and some iron-on lettering.

When her husband arrived home, she yelled for him to run upstairs to their bedroom to kill a spider. (Chivalry is not dead, it just smells funny!) When he got there, he saw the tiny little onesie on the bed with “hi daddy” written on the front and the pregnancy stick lying next to it! (Not sure if this was meant to be about where it all began?)

Side note: I have been waiting a loooong time to be a grandma… After having three boys, I finally had my baby girl at the age of 37! Since her older brothers have not yet bore me grandchildren (sigh), I thought I would never see this day. But, God in his mercy has found favor upon me and redeemed me from my grandma-barren-ness state! My baby is having a baby?!

So, here’s how I (Grandma) found out: Cassie and I are very close; so, it was quite difficult for her to keep this very special secret from me until their up-coming visit. She knows I can tell when something is up, so she completely avoided me. I wondered why I hadn’t heard from my bestie and thought something was wrong.

It was the first week of September 2022, when the excited couple drove out from Silverdale, Washington to visit - - across the state of Washington, into Idaho on the I-90, and literally, over the river and through the woods to (soon-to-be) grandmother’s house they go! As soon as they showed up, I could tell something was off. Cassie and Justin said their “hello’s” and disappeared into the guest room for a bit. About ten minutes later, they emerged with a little gift bag! Her dad and I opened it and found a cute little wood Pooh plaque with the words: Sometimes the Smallest things take up the most room in your heart. I was like “Oh how sweet!” I thought it was a little juvenile, but I DID NOT GET IT! Okay, before you judge me, I have to give a little background on what happened just the night before… So, Cassie’s dad and I were watching old family home videos. One of the videos was of me birthing Cassie. I had commented to my husband that I had no idea at that time just how much this little newborn baby girl would fill my heart and my life with so much love and joy. The words on the little Pooh plaque seemed to speak to how SHE filled my heart!

Well, there was one other item in the little gift bag that Cassie gave us: The second I saw the tiny Pooh Bear onesie, I realized MY BABY IS HAVING A BABY!!! I AM GOING TO BE A GRANDMA!!! I was about to be redeemed from my grandma-barren-ness shame! I could barely contain myself! It was as if I had been inaugurated into the grandma hall of fame and was now a member of an elite class of the wisest women on the planet! Yes, I know this is NOT about me. But I was on cloud nine and nothing was going to bring me back down!

I now saw my daughter in a new way! She was about to experience something that nothing else compares to. She would soon know what it is to have a tiny new person enter your life, fill your heart, and change you forever!
